Warning signs of a romance scam

A relationship that becomes a source of pressure, secrecy, or repeated payment requests deserves a pause. Financial manipulation can happen to anyone.

Look for patterns, not one detail

Rapid declarations of affection, repeated reasons not to meet, requests to leave a platform, and sudden financial emergencies can occur together in a scam. None proves fraud by itself, but the combined pattern should prompt independent verification.

Keep money separate from the relationship

Do not send funds, gift-card codes, cryptocurrency, or account access to someone whose identity and circumstances you cannot independently verify. Be particularly cautious when the person introduces an investment platform or asks you to receive and forward payments.

Preserve evidence without escalating contact

Save the profile URL, original messages, payment requests, and receipts. Report suspicious accounts to the platform. If threats are involved, contact appropriate authorities and trusted support rather than attempting to investigate or confront the person yourself.

Ask for support

Contact your bank or payment provider promptly about payments already sent. Talk to a trusted person. Shame and isolation can make pressure more effective; a supportive, nonjudgmental conversation can help you decide what to do next.
